Jordan developing multiple projects to boost power link with neighbors

Jordan is working to increase the capacity of its electricity sector to prepare it for expanded common power grids with its Arab neighbours. Amman will shortly begin supplying 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Iraq. Another project, completed by late 2026, to improve max capacity of Egypt-Jordan interconnection to 1,100 MW.

According to a report appearing this week in Zawya Projects, Jordan is working to increase the capacity of its electricity sector to prepare it for expanded common power grids with its Arab neighbours. This was according to a statement from the Jordanian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

Interconnection plans

The Ministry said Amman would shortly begin supplying 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Iraq and that it is working to increase the capacity of its power stations at the border to boost supplies.

The whole project is expected to be finished in the fourth quarter of 2024 according to an agreement signed with Iraq in September 2020 to deliver regular power supplies to that country.

According to the Jordanian news report as quoted by Zawya Projects, the main project will upgrade main link lines to supply up to 1,000 MW, requiring the expansion of the power network in East Jordan through the installation of additional lines. 

Connecting to Egypt

The Jordanian news report said Jordan is engaged in another project to improve the capacity of interconnection with Egypt to 1,100 MW, which is expected to be completed in late 2026.

As for Saudi Arabia, studies have been prepared about the planned power grid connection, the report said.

“The electricity authorities in the two countries are discussing a final formula for the project.... After it is completed, the project will be officially signed and launched.”

As reported in Energy & Utilities, The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) was created in 2001 by the six Gulf states. The GCCIA’s major project currently underway is the GCC Interconnection Grid which runs along all Gulf states, connecting their major power plants.

A report by Energy & Utilities earlier this year highlighted Jordan as a rising star in renewable power exports.

Another report by Energy & Utilities last year showed that the bid deadline for a Saudi-Jordan interconnection had been extended.

يعمل الأردن على زيادة قدرة قطاع الكهرباء لإعداده لتوسيع شبكات الكهرباء المشتركة مع جيرانه العرب. ستبدأ عمان قريبا في تزويد العراق ب 50 ميجاوات من الكهرباء. وهناك مشروع آخر، اكتمل بحلول أواخر عام 2026، لتحسين القدرة القصوى للربط البيني بين مصر والأردن إلى 1100 ميجاوات.

وفقا لتقرير ظهر هذا الأسبوع في مشاريع زاوية، يعمل الأردن على زيادة قدرة قطاع الكهرباء لإعداده لتوسيع شبكات الكهرباء المشتركة مع جيرانه العرب. جاء ذلك وفقا لبيان صادر عن وزارة الطاقة والثروة المعدنية الأردنية.

خطط ربط الاتصال البيني

وقالت الوزارة إن عمان ستبدأ قريبا في تزويد العراق ب 50 ميجاوات من الكهرباء وإنها تعمل على زيادة قدرة محطات الكهرباء على الحدود لتعزيز الإمدادات.

ومن المتوقع الانتهاء من المشروع بأكمله في الربع الرابع من عام 2024 وفقا لاتفاقية موقعة مع العراق في سبتمبر 2020 لتوصيل إمدادات الطاقة المنتظمة إلى ذلك البلد.

ووفقا للتقرير الإخباري الأردني الذي نقلته شركة زاوية للمشاريع، فإن المشروع الرئيسي سيقوم بتحديث خطوط الربط الرئيسية لتزويد ما يصل إلى 1000 ميجاوات ، مما يتطلب توسيع شبكة الكهرباء في شرق الأردن من خلال تركيب خطوط إضافية.

 الربط مع مصر

وقال التقرير الإخباري الأردني إن الأردن منخرط في مشروع آخر لتحسين قدرة الربط الكهربائي مع مصر إلى 1100 ميجاوات ، ومن المتوقع الانتهاء منه في أواخر عام 2026.

أما بالنسبة للمملكة العربية السعودية ، فقد تم إعداد دراسات حول ربط شبكة الكهرباء المخطط لها ، حسبما ذكر التقرير.

تقوم السلطات الكهربائية في البلدين بمناقشة صيغة نهائية للمشروع... بعد الانتهاء منه، سيتم توقيع المشروع رسميًا وإطلاقه.

ووفقًا لتقرير نشرته مجلة الطاقة والمرافق، تم إنشاء هيئة الربط الكهربائي لدول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية (GCCIA) في عام 2001 من قبل الدول الست. ويعد مشروع شبكة الربط البيني لدول مجلس التعاون الخليجي الذي يجري العمل عليه حاليًا المشروع الرئيسي لـهيئة الربط الكهربائي لدول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية ، حيث يمتد عبر جميع الدول الخليجية ويوصل محطات الطاقة الرئيسية فيها.

وأشار تقرير نشرته مجلة الطاقة والمرافق في وقت سابق هذا العام إلى أن الأردن يعتبر نجمًا صاعدًا في صادرات الطاقة المتجددة.

كما أظهر تقرير آخر نشرته مجلة الطاقة والمرافق في العام الماضي أن الموعد النهائي لتقديم العروض لاتصال كهربائي بين السعودية والأردن تم تمديده.
