Egyptian Green Hydrogen Project Secures Major $32.7m Grant

Egyptian green hydrogen project in the SCZONE secures a $32.7m grant, boosting its renewable energy leadership goals.

A major green hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone of Egypt has received a major boost. A €30 million grant (around $32.7 million), was recently awarded to this project. The grant will contribute to Egypt's ambitions of being a global green hydrogen leader.

International Partnerships and Investment

The deal was signed in Hamburg, Germany at the Sustainability Conference. It involves Scatec of Norway and the PtX Development Fund of Germany. The PtX Development Fund, backed by the German government, funds green hydrogen projects across many countries. These include Egypt, Brazil, Georgia, India, Kenya, Morocco, and South Africa. All in all, the fund amounts to €270 million ($294 million).

Egypt's green hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone is part of the country’s push toward renewable energy. The Ministry of Planning says it will create 1,330 jobs. It will also produce 70,000 tons of green ammonia. This ammonia plays a key role in cutting carbon emissions. Industries like agriculture will benefit from this cleaner energy source.

Egypt's Green Hydrogen Vision

By 2050, Egypt aims to achieve the lowest production cost of green hydrogen. The goal is to reach $1.7 per kilogram which would make Egypt a competitive player in the global hydrogen market. The country is also aiming to capture at least 8% of the global green hydrogen market, positioning itself as a leader in the renewable energy transition.

Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning, emphasised the potential in the energy sector. She highlighted the importance of international cooperation, especially with Germany and the European Union. Such partnerships will help strengthen Egypt’s green hydrogen capabilities. It also opens up many opportunities for Egypt to export hydrogen to other markets.

Egypt's Green Hydrogen Development Efforts

Egypt is making great progress in its green hydrogen sector. Earlier this year, the country signed seven agreements with global developers. These deals could bring in $41 billion over the next decade with a focus on green hydrogen and renewable energy.

Recently Egypt’s green hydrogen market received further global attention. We see this through the Egyptian government opening its doors to John Cockerill International, a key player in the green hydrogen market. So when it comes to green hydrogen, Egypt means business.

On top of this, the Egyptian government has also introduced a national strategy for green hydrogen production. It even created the National Council for Green Hydrogen. This shows Egypt's commitment to becoming a top producer and exporter of green hydrogen.

Egypt's Path to Climate Neutrality

The green hydrogen project supports Egypt’s climate neutrality strategy in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. The aim is to reduce emissions in resource- and energy-intensive industries. This project also helps move Egypt closer to achieving its sustainability goals. Equally, it will help the country become a key player in the global green hydrogen economy.

Egypt’s green hydrogen project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone represents a significant step in the country’s renewable energy efforts. With strong international backing and ambitious targets, Egypt is positioning itself as a leader in the global shift towards clean energy.
