Germany’s Siemens Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala to establish strategic partnership to drive the development of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels in the emirate.

According to a statement released on 17 January about the agreement, the initial focus of the partnership will be on activity in Abu Dhabi with the intention to expand this internationally in the future.

The MoU was signed by Musabbeh al-Kaabi, chief executive officer of UAE Investments at Mubadala Investment Company, and Christian Bruch, CEO of Siemens Energy.

Mohamed Jameel al-Ramahi, CEO of Mubadala’s clean energy subsidiary Masdar, was also present at the signing.

Under the agreement, Masdar and other energy entities of Mubadala will work with Siemens to achieve the following targets:

  • Using renewable energy to produce green hydrogen and synthetic fuels to provide clean and transportable energy
  • Establish an Abu Dhabi-based leading global player in the synthetic fuels sector
  • Advance technology to drive down the costs of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels
  • Enable both parties to access emerging hydrogen markets

"Mubadala is strongly committed to the development of the UAE’s hydrogen economy, and we are pleased to be extending our relationship with Siemens Energy in this important emerging energy sector," Al-Kaabi said following the signing.

"Through this strategic partnership, we expect to be able to leverage Abu Dhabi’s strong foundations for the production and sale of green hydrogen, prove a strong business case and attract investment for the development of new facilities, and establish Abu Dhabi as a reliable supplier of green hydrogen to global markets."

"This strategic partnership highlights the UAE’s visionary commitment towards developing a sustainable, green hydrogen economy," said Dietmar Siersdorfer, Managing Director Siemens Energy Middle East.

The agreement was signed days after Siemens signed an agreement with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity & Renewable Energy for a green hydrogen pilot project.

In September, Energy & Utilities caught up with Manuel Kuehn, Head of New Energy for Middle East and Africa, Siemens Energyto find out more about the opportunities and challenges in integrating green hydrogen into energy transition programmes across the region.
