Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) has revealed it has completed 96.4 per cent of the water pipeline project to extend its water transmission network by 36.6km.

The AED256m ($70m) project is part of Dewa’s programme to upgrade its water network to improve efficiency and reduce losses in the system.

According to Dewa, Dubai has reduced the water losses in its transmission and distribution networks from 42 per cent in 1988 to 5.1 per cent in 2021.

The water pipeline project has two sections. Section A with 12.52 kilometres of 1200mm dia in total and Section B with 13.97 kilometres of 1200mm pipeline & 10.15 kilometres of 600mm  The project includes the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of Glass-Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) water pipes (in different diameters), and also precast GRE chambers.

The project is due to reach completion in August 2021.

Dewa recently revealed that installed capacity of desalinated water in the emirate had reached 490 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) following the commissioning of new reverse osmosis (RO) units at it Jebel Ali power and water plant.

Dewa has 43 multi-stage-flash (MSF) desalination units with a total production capacity of 427MIGD at Jebeli Ali. The utility also has two RO plants with a production capacity of 63MIGD at its Jebel Ali production facility.

Dewa is aiming to significantly increase Dubai’s RO capacity to reach 303MIGD by 2030 - with the result that RO will account for 42 per cent of the total desalination capacity in the emirate, up from 13 per cent today.

Dewa is planning for the total installed desalination capacity to reach 730MIGD in 2030.

As part of the announcement about the increase in capacity, Saeed Mohammed Al-Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa, revealed that Dewa has energy and water assets with a total value of AED182bn ($50bn).
