TotalEnergies joins UAE green hydrogen and clean fuel scheme
TotalEnergies joins Masdar and Siemens Energy consortium to develop a demonstrator plant which will convert carbon dioxide into sustainable aviation fuel
France’s TotalEnergies has joined a consortium of UAE-based Masdar and Germany’s Siemens Energy to develop green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel.
The collaboration agreement between the three parties was signed on 19 January on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) in Abu Dhabi.
The project will involve the development of a demonstrator plant project in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, which will be developed to produce green hydrogen to convert carbon dioxide into sustainable aviation fuel.
“In this project, TotalEnergies brings its expertise in renewable energy as well as SAF manufacturing and marketing advanced sustainable fuel production with the aim of acting directly on the carbon intensity of the energy products used by our customers,” said Francois Good, senior vice president, refining and petrochemicals Africa, Middle East and Asia at TotalEnergies.
The project was launched at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January 2021, with Masdar signing an agreement with Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa Group, Khalifa University, Siemens Energy and Japan’s Marubeni Corporation to collaborate on the demonstrator project. TotalEnergies will assist with its expertise in SA production, offtake and supply for the partner airlines.
Since January 2021, the partners have completed a range of evaluations on technology suppliers, feasibility studies, conceptual designs, while working closely with regulators on compliance issues. The aim is to proceed with the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage later this year.
