Oman signs $475m of electricity transmission contracts

Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has signed contracts worth RO183m ($475m) for several major contracts for projects to connect the sultanate’s north and south electricity transmission networks

 

Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has signed contracts worth RO183m ($475m) for several major contracts for projects to connect the sultanate’s north and south electricity transmission networks.

The agreements signed are for the first phase of the ‘Rabt’ project, which will connect Oman’s national grid in the north with the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Duqm, and the transmission network of the Petroleum Development of Oman (PDO) and also the Tanweer network in the Wusta region.

In addition to increasing efficiency and flexibility of the sultanate’s grids, the projects to link the grids will also facilitate the increased use of renewable energy resources, with the Wusta region providing an ideal location for solar and wind schemes. Oman has set a target for renewable energy to produce 15 per cent of the country’s energy by 2025.

The first phase of the Rabt scheme consists of five projects, which includes 660km of 400kV overhead lines and five grid substations.

One of the projects involves the construction of 400kV substations at Barik and Suwaihat, which will link the grid to the PDO network. The total cost for the project is RO39m, and will take 24 months to complete.

The contract for the project to link the Barik and Suwihat substations with 129km of 400kV overhead lines is worth RO45m and will take 28 months to complete.

The third contract involves supplying and installing 400kV overhead lines between Suwaihat and Duqm stations, and overhead lines with a total length of 152km between Duqm and Mahoot. This contract is also worth RO45m and will take 28 months to complete.

A RO38m contract has been awarded for the project to build 400kV substations at Duqm and Mahoot.

A RO17m contract was awarded for the project to build a 132/400kW substation at Nuhaida. The work will take 24 months to complete.
