Morocco considers nuclear power

Morocco is mulling developing nuclear power as part of its strategy to provide low carbon electricity, with a report exploring the potential feasibility to be delivered to parliament in 2022

Morocco is mulling developing nuclear power as part of its strategy to provide low carbon electricity, a minister was quoted in a local press article.

“Morocco has invested in solar and wind energy, and it is now eyeing nuclear energy to ensure its electricity needs in the future…we now need a national decision to start producing electricity from nuclear energy,” Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Minister Leila Benali was quoted by local Arabic daily Hespress.

Benali referred to a report which was commissioned in 2015 to consider the development of nuclear power in the North African country, with results of the study dye to be reported to parliament by the end of 2022.

“The report comprises recommendations for switching to nuclear energy,” Benali was quoted.

According to Benali, the recommendations cover the legislative framework and infrastructure required to develop nuclear power in Morocco.

“Morocco has invested in solar and wind energy, and it is now eyeing nuclear energy to ensure its electricity needs in the future…we now need a national decision to start producing electricity from nuclear energy,” Benali was quoted in the Hespress article.

Morocco has already made commendable progress with developing clean energy, having already achieved one of the largest proportions of clean energy in its power sector in the Arab world.

Energy & Utilities reported in 2021 that Morocco is set to hit its target 2030 target for 52 per cent of its energy to come from renewable sources in 2024, six years earlier than originally targeted. The North African country currently has 4GW of renewable capacity already commissioned, with a further 4GW under construction or in the development phase.
