Government utility Sharjah Electricity & Water and Gas Authority (Sewa) has awarded a contract to Metito a contract to rehabilitate the existing 20 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD) Hamriyah Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plant in the Northern Emirate.

Metito was awarded the restoration contract following a competitive tendering process. Under the terms of the contract, Metito will dismantle and replace the existing equipment and structure, renovate the SWRO system, and implement additional membranes in eight skids. Metito will also be upgrading the electrical system to accommodate new equipment and integrate a Distributed Control System (DCS).

Site works are due to begin in May 2022.

“The Hamriyah SWRO plant began operations in 2014 and is one of the main desalination plants serving the emirate of Sharjah. This restoration project is a milestone in supporting the UAE’s water security 2036 goals, and part of Sharjah’s multipronged strategy to increase the emirate’s sustainable water supply. We are pleased to be developing it with Metito with whom we worked before and share similar values,” said Esam al-Mulla, manager of water production and desalination plants, Sewa, following the contract award.

The project is part of Sewa’s programme to upgrade and expand its utilities infrastructure, with the Northern Emirate having become increasingly dependent on imports from Abu Dhabi in recent years.

In 2018, GE Energy Financial Services and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation signed a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sewa to develop, build and operate the 1.8GW Hamriyah independent power producer (IPP) plant in Sharjah.

The Hamriyah IPP will boost Sharjah’s generating capacity to 4,600MW.
