The constant need for a minimum base-load of available electricity means that nuclear power has a vital role to play in the decarbonisation of the global energy sector according to  Frederic Wiscart, global managing director nuclear projects at GE Steam Power.

“Nuclear [power] already offers a constant supply of carbon-free energy and compliments wind and solar energy very well in terms of it being able to provide the minimum base-load,” Wiscart told delegates at the Middle East Energy Online 2021 conference.

The executive added that nuclear power was 2.5 times more reliable than renewable energy sources so offered much more flexibility to governments wanting to increase their options of carbon-free power sources.

Middle East Energy Online 2021 is being held over a four week period from 17 May to 9 June.
