Masdar and Tribe form Australia waste-to-energy joint venture

Abu-Dhabi based clean energy firm Masdar and Tribe Infrastructure Group have established a joint venture to develop waste-to-energy (WTE) projects in Australia

Abu-Dhabi based clean energy firm Masdar and Tribe Infrastructure Group have established a joint venture to develop waste-to-energy (WTE) projects in Australia.

The joint venture (JV) was announced at the launch of the Australia-UAE Business Council in Sydney, Australia.

The JV will seek to develop WFE projects from the estimated 27 million tonnes of waste that is landfilled in Australia every year.

In January 2020, Masdar and Tribe announced they had acquired a 40 per cent stake in the East Rockingham WTE project, located near Perth, Australia. The $377m project is currently under construction and is due to be operational in late 2022.

The Rockingham plant will have the capacity to produce 29MW of renewable energy, enough to power 36,000 homes. The plant will also recover about 70,000 tonnes of bottom ash, which will be processed for use in roadbase and other construction materials.

In October, Masdar and Tribe also joined Opal Australian Paper and Suez Australia and New Zealand as equity partners for the development of the Maryvale WTE project in Victoria.
