Marubeni consortium selected for Saudi Aramco Marjan ISPP project

A consortium of Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and the UAE’s Taqa has received a conditional letter of award from Saudi Aramco for the planned Marjan cogeneration independent steam and power plant (ISPP) and Tanajib desalination plant in Saudi Arabia.

The selected consortium was one of four groups which submitted bids in September for the Marjan ISPP and Tanajib independent water project (IWP).

Energy & Utilities previously reported that Saudi Aramco was holding clarification meetings with bidders for the planned ISPP and IWP.

The Marjan ISPP is planned to have a power capacity of 700MW-900MW, with a steam capacity of 1,152-3,054 kilo pounds an hour. The Tanajib desalination project, which was added to the project’s scope in the prequalification stage, will have a desalination component of 24,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d), which will be expandable to 34,000 cm/d by 2030.

Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is advising Saudi Aramco on the project, with Germany’s Fichtner Consulting Engineers providing technical consultancy services.

Saudi Aramco is also planning to develop an ISPP at its Jafurah unconventional gas development. The oil company recently extended the bid submission date for the Jafurah project from 31 January to 15 March.

The cogeneration plant will have a power capacity of 270MW-320MW and a low-pressure (LP) steam demand of 77-166 thousand pounds an hour (klb/hr) and high-pressure (HP) steam demand of 29-126 klb/hour by 2023. The LP and HP steam demand will increase to 283-373 klb/hr and 66-321 klb/hr by 2027 respectively.

Aramco has set a target commissioning date for the project for 31 March 2023. The local SMBC has been appointed as financial adviser for the scheme.
