Dubai records peak power load increase of 6.6 per cent

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) revealed that peak demand growth for electricity in the emirate reached 6.6 per cent in the year-to-date, 6.6 per cent higher than for the same period in 2012. The increase marks the largest rise in power demand since 2012.

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) has recorded a 6.6 per cent increase in peak power demand for the year to date, the highest recorded increase since 2012.

The peak demand for electricity this year reached 9,074MW, compared to 8,516MW for the same period in 2019.

“In line with our vision as a globally leading sustainable innovative corporation, we seek to secure uninterrupted and stable supplies of electricity and water, and we support the vision and strategic plans of the Government of Dubai to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development in the Emirate. This increase in the peak load is a testimony to the boost of social and economic activities in Dubai. DEWA has an installed capacity of 11,700MW of electricity and 470 MIG of water per day,” said Saeed Mohammed al-Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa.

Al-Tayer also revealed in a statement announcing the peak demand figures that Dewa had significantly reduced the losses in its electricity transmission and distribution (T&D) networks to 3.2 per cent. According to Al-Tayer, average losses recorded in Europe and the US are about 6-7 per cent.
