Sweden’s Azelio has been awarded its first energy storage project contract in Dubai under its partnership with the local Alec Energy.
The storage unit will be installed at the fourth phase of the Mohamed bin Rashid (MBR) solar park in Dubai, which is being developed by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power.
The 950MW fourth phase is being developed with a concentrated solar power (CSP) capacity of 700MW and a photovoltaic (PV) solar capacity of 250MW. Azelio’s energy storage component will facilitate energy shifting in the system and will assist manage mini-grid stability.
"This is a major milestone for Azelio and we are thrilled to achieve it together with Alec Energy, the lead EPC contractor for the MBR solar project. Our presence in this giant project allows us to showcase our solution to important audiences and demonstrate how our long-duration energy storage can make solar power available around the clock in an affordable way," Azelio’s CEO Jonas Eklind said following the announcement of the contract.
The projects will be developed in the Middle East and Africa markets.
The storage technology developed by Azelio can be coupled with photovoltaic (PV) solar, wind power or any other energy source. The energy produced can be stored in recycled aluminium and then supply renewable energy as heat or electricity 24 hours a day.
Under the MoU, the technology will be rolled out until 2025 with the first 150kW in 2021, 4MW in 2022, 7MW in 2023, 13MW in 2024 and the remaining 25MW in 2025.
In August, Alec and Azelio signed a contract to develop a pilot solar energy storage site at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.
An agreement has been signed for Alec Energy to prepare and set up the installation site for the planned scheme. The verification project will be installed, in partnership with Masdar and Khalifa University in the third quarter of 2020.
