Scatec Solar wins 360MW solar contract in Tunisia

Norway’s Scatec Solar has been awarded contracts to develop three solar independent power producer (IPP) projects in Tunisia with a combined total capacity of 360MW.

The largest plant, 240MW, will be located in Tataouine, with two 60MW plants to be developed in the areas of Tozeur and Sidi Bouzid respectively.

Scatec solar will sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) with state energy company Societe Tunisienne de l‘Electricite et du Gaz (STEG) for a concession period of 20 years. The plants will have a combined total energy production of 830GWh (Gigawatt hours) per year, which will provide enough electricity to supply more than 300,000 Tunisian households a year.

Scatec will be the lead equity investor in the projects and will also provide the main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) series. The Norwegian firm will also provider operation and maintenance (O&M) and asset management services for the solar plants.

The projects were part of a competitive bidding process under which developers submitted proposals for five PV projects with a total combined capacity of 500MW in July. Scatec submitted the lowest bid for four of the five projects, which included a 100MW project at Kairouan in addition to the three it was awarded.

All of the lowest tariffs for each project were below $3cents a kilowatt hour.

The solar projects are part of Tunisia’s plans to install 4.7GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
