Saudi Aramco invites bids for desalination project

Saudi Aramco has invited developers to submit proposals for an independent water producer (IWP) desalination project at its Jafurah gas field

Saudi Aramco has invited developers to submit proposals for an independent water producer (IWP) desalination project at its Jafurah gas field.

The IWP project is planned to have a capacity of about 80,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d).

This is the second time that Saudi Aramco has issued a tender for a desalination project at Jafurah, having cancelled a previous tender for a 100,000 cm/d plant in December 2020.

This is the public-private partnership (PPP) water project that Saudi Aramco has tendered in 2021. Energy & Utilities reported in June that Aramco had invited developers to submit proposals for a project to develop a water treatment plant at Zuluf in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia.

The water treatment plant will reinject treated water into the Zuluf field. Aramco set a deadline of 31 October for the project, which is planned to have an initial capacity of 185,000 cubic metres a day (cm/d).

According to sources close to the project, the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) has been appointed as financial adviser, with White & Case and ILF Consulting Engineers appointed as legal and technical consultants respectively.

Saudi Aramco is also planning to develop a reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant and independent sewage treatment plant (ISTP) at the Zuluf oil fields.

In August 2021, Saudi Aramco also retendered the Jafurah cogeneration independent steam and power plant (ISPP), which as with the Jafurah desalination project had been tendered and cancelled in 2020.

The cogeneration plant was planned to have a power capacity of 270MW-320MW and a low-pressure (LP) steam demand of 77-166 thousand pounds an hour (klb/hr) and high-pressure (HP) steam demand of 29-126 klb/hour by 2023. The LP and HP steam demand will increase to 283-373 klb/hr and 66-321 klb/hr by 2027 respectively.

The Jafurah gas development is part of Aramco’s $3.2bn unconventional resources programme, which aims to develop shale gas in three areas of the kingdom.
