Oman prepares to issue tenders for solar IPPs

Oman Power & Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is preparing to issue tender documents for the planned Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar independent power projects (IPPs).

The client received prequalification documents for the planned photovoltaic (PV) solar IPPs in August. Both IPPs are planned to each have a capacity of 500MW-600MW.

Manah is located 150 kilometres southwest of the capital Muscat.

Indian-based Synergy Consulting is the financial adviser for Manah 1 and 2. The UK’s DLA Piper and Germany’s Fichtner are providing technical and legal advisory services, respectively.

Oman is targeting for renewables to contribute 10 per cent of the sultanate’s generating capacity in the main interconnected system (MIS) by 2025, which will total about 2,200MW.

The first 500MW of solar capacity is scheduled to come online in 2022.

In May this year, a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power signed the project agreements for the planned 500MW Ibri 2 solar IPP.
