MEE 2021: Digitalised power distribution essential

Modern grids too complex to be operated without “digital brain” says executive

The fast-changing landscape of power distribution and the integration of renewable energy is moving at such a rapid pace that conventional operating systems need to evolve, according to Ahmed Fateen, Vice President of Power Systems, Gulf, at France’s Schneider Electric.

Fateen told delegates at the Middle East Energy Online 2021 conference that a digital brain was now required in order to handle the diverse technical requirements of a modern distribution system.

“The operation of [electrical distribution] networks are so complex that digitalisation is the only option,” Mr Fateen said. “Running the network and planning for future upgrades is only possible with a digitalised system in place.”

The executive added that increasing efficiency while also reducing the carbon footprint of an electric distribution system was only possible via a digitalised system.

Middle East Energy 2021 is being held virtually over a four-week period from 17 May to 9 June.
