The project is a result of a significant collaboration between the Egyptian government, international financial institutions, and private sector investors. The total investment in the park is estimated at around $4 billion. Key contributors include the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, which played a crucial role in financing and attracting private investments.
Construction of the park began in 2017 and was completed in 2019. The park comprises 41 individual plants with a combined capacity of approximately 1.8 gigawatts (GW). Each plant is connected to the national grid, contributing significantly to Egypt's energy mix.
Impact on Egypt's Energy Landscape
Benban Solar Park has significantly increased Egypt's renewable energy capacity. Before the park's completion, Egypt's renewable energy contribution was minimal. With Benban's addition, the country has made a substantial leap toward its goal of generating 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2035.
The solar park has created numerous job opportunities, both during its construction and operational phases. It is estimated that the project generated over 10,000 jobs, contributing to the local economy. Environmentally, Benban Solar Park helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2 million tons of CO2 annually, aligning with Egypt's commitments under the Paris Agreement.
By harnessing solar power, Benban Solar Park enhances Egypt's energy security and reduces dependency on fossil fuels. This diversification is crucial for the country's long-term energy strategy, providing a more resilient and sustainable energy supply.
Future Expansion Plans
Given the success of Benban Solar Park, there are plans to expand its capacity further. The Egyptian government is exploring the possibility of increasing the park's capacity by an additional 1 GW. This expansion will involve new phases of development and additional investments.
Future expansion plans also focus on integrating advanced solar technologies to improve efficiency and energy output. This includes the use of bifacial solar panels, which capture sunlight from both sides, and the implementation of energy storage solutions to manage variability and ensure a steady power supply.
To facilitate these expansions, Egypt continues to seek partnerships with international organizations and private investors. The ongoing support from institutions like the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) will be pivotal in achieving these goals.
