Egypt maintains 42% renewable energy goal for 2030 but urges help
Egypt reaffirms its 42% renewable energy goal for 2030 but needs international support to meet its target amid energy challenges.
Egypt has set an ambitious goal for renewable energy. By 2030, the country aims for 42% of its electricity to come from renewable sources. However, achieving this target could be challenging without more international support, according to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
Egypt's Current Renewable Energy Mix
Currently, a mere 11.5% of Egypt's electricity comes from renewable energy sources. These sources include the likes of solar, wind, and hydropower. These renewable sources make up a small fraction of Egypt's total energy mix. The country still depends on the usage of natural gas - a source perceived as a ‘transition fuel’. However, Egypt's production of natural gas has encountered complications over the last few years. This has resulted in power shortages, so steering away from natural gas is desirable.
Challenges of meeting Egypt's Renewable Energy Targets
Even in the face of such challenges, Egypt has not withdrawn from its renewable energy commitments. At the COP29 conference, for example, Egypt's Prime Minister Madbouly pointed out the necessity of international support. He explained that without such support, it would be hard for Egypt to achieve its renewable energy targets. He cautioned that in the absence of such support, Egypt's climate goals could remain mere “ink on paper.”
Egypt's Renewable Energy Plans Beyond 2030
The government has set clear plans for the future. In addition to the 42% renewable energy target by 2030, Egypt is also planning for further growth in the sector. In 2023, former Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker outlined a new plan to push the renewable share to 58% by 2040. This is part of Egypt's larger strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Importance of Foreign Investment
Foreign investment is crucial for Egypt to achieve its renewable energy goals. The government has been looking for foreign capital to develop renewable energy projects in the country. This involves at large green hydrogen, solar and wind projects. Egypt has enormous potential for harnessing renewable energy. That is because it has plenty of sunlight and strong winds, especially along the Red Sea coast.
The Egyptian government is also exploring more natural gas production. This is to meet the country’s energy needs. Still, more attention is being directed to cleaner, sustainable forms of energy.
Reaching Egypt's Renewable Energy goals
Egypt has an ambitious goal for renewable energy, aiming for 42% by 2030. This goal is achievable with the right support. But Egypt will need financial help, expertise, and international partnerships.
Focusing on renewables will ensure long-term energy security. It will also help Egypt contribute to global climate efforts. Reaching these targets will require a global effort. So, there needs to be a global effort to support Egypt’s renewable energy projects and goals.
