Egypt Advances in Renewable Energy Projects
Egypt is advancing renewable energy projects to generate 7,150 MW from wind and solar power, with added battery storage integration.
Egypt is making significant strides in renewable energy. The country is working on projects that will generate a total of 7,150 megawatts (MW) of power. This effort div between wind and solar energy.
The Focus of Egypt's Renewable Energy Projects
Egypt is focusing on two main types of renewable energy: Wind energy and solar energy.
When it comes to wind energy, Egypt plans to produce 3,450 MW from wind projects. These involve collaborations with the Orascom-Engie-Toyota consortium, Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power, and the UAE’s Masdar. Thee location of these projects are all around the Red Sea area.
Then with solar power, Egypt aims for 3,700 MW from solar projects. This includes efforts from Egypt’s Abydos, Norway’s Scatec, and Masdar.
Battery Storage Integration
The government is also focusing on integrating battery storage systems. They plan to include 2,840 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage in these projects. This will help store energy for times when there is a lack of energy generated.
Support for Private Sector
Egypt is encouraging private sector participation in renewable energy. The government has allocated land to the New and Renewable Energy Authority for various projects. These include the likes of green hydrogen projects.
Investment Incentives in Egypt's Renewable Energy Sector
To boost investment in renewable energy, the government is offering several incentives:
First, customs duties on components and spare parts for renewable energy systems have dropped from 5 percent to 2 percent. A reduction is value-added tax from 14 percent to 15 percent has also occurred.
The Egyptian government is also making it easier for companies to set up projects. For example, they offer land in exchange for a 2 percent share in the annual electricity production. By offering this incentive, they are increasing the appeal of this investment avenues. In doing so Egypt is encouraging more investment into renewable energy.
These steps aim to make Egypt a more attractive place for renewable energy investments. With these measures, Egypt hopes to boost its renewable energy sector and meet its energy goals.
