Dubai Airports & Emirates Partner for Huge Solar Energy Project

Dubai Airports and Emirates will install the world’s largest rooftop solar panel system at two airports, generating 60,346 MWh annually.

Dubai Airports and Emirates have partnered with Etihad Clean Energy Development Company to promote sustainability through solar energy. Their goal is to build the world’s largest rooftop solar panel system at an airport.

World’s Largest Rooftop Solar Project at an Airport

The project will install 62,904 solar panels at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC). These panels will generate 60,346 MWh of clean energy every year. The total capacity will reach 39MWp of clean energy. This energy will cover 6.5% of DXB’s power needs and 20% of DWC’s.

The ambitious project will roll out in phases and be fully operational by 2026. Once finished, the solar panels will help reduce carbon emissions. They will offset around 23,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.

So, this project is a key step in making Dubai’s airports more sustainable. The solar panels will play a big role in cutting the city's carbon footprint.

Partnership Announcement

The announcement of this partnership took place during the World Green Economy Summit. The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and the World Green Economy Organization hosted the summit. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, and Dr. Waleed Alnuaimi, CEO of Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, signed the agreement.

Paul Griffiths highlighted the responsibility that airports have as major energy consumers. He explained that this project goes beyond installing solar panels. It's about embedding sustainability into the core of the airport's operations. By generating renewable energy, Dubai Airports can reduce its carbon footprint and set a new standard for sustainability in the aviation industry.

A Step Toward a Greener Future

This project marks a big step in Dubai's push for sustainability. It builds on the earlier solar panel installations at DXB's Terminal 2 and Concourse D. These solar panels have already cut down energy use and emissions at the airport.

Solar power remains crucial in lowering the environmental impact of airports. So as more airports turn to renewable energy, Dubai Airports takes the lead. Alongside Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, they're driving change towards decarbonising aviation. Together, they are setting a strong example for the future of cleaner eco-friendly airports.

Dubai Airports becoming a global sustainability leader

This initiative places Dubai Airports as a sustainability leader, both within the region and globally. The partnership with the Etihad Clean Energy Development Company reflects a shared vision for a cleaner, energy-efficient future. Yet, this solar project is just one part of Dubai's plan to power its infrastructure with green energy. So, Dubai Airports is raising the bar for sustainable projects in Dubai and airports worldwide.

The project is also part of a bigger effort to future-proof airport operations. With airports across the globe seeking ways to cut carbon emissions, this is important. This is because it positions Dubai as a leading example by showing how solar energy can play a critical role.

Dubai Airports is creating a sustainable future

Working with Emirates, Dubai Airports takes a bold step toward a greener future. This project, in collaboration with the Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, is both a local success and a global statement. It highlights the future of energy in aviation.

As the project progresses, it will have a lasting environmental impact, setting new standards for airports worldwide. In doing so, Dubai is leading the change toward a more sustainable future in aviation.
