Covid-19 and the renewable energy sector: join our live webinar on 28 April (1pm Gulf standard time)

With the Covid-19 virus outbreak continuing to have major implications for the energy sector across the globe, Energy & Utilities is hosting a series of webinars on the impact of the coronavirus on the energy markets across the Middle East and North Africa (Mena).

While many unknowns remain in terms of when the virus will peak in countries throughout the region, providing a stable supply of power and water for people and businesses is vital. As ensuring the health of populations rightfully remains the primary objective of governments, the critical nature of keeping electricity and water supplies running and ensuring demand is met for utilities means that the energy conversation is one that must continue.

Following the success of our first webinar earlier this week, we will be hosting the second webinar of the series on the ‘Impact of Covid-19 on renewable energy programmes’ on 28 April at 1pm Gulf standard time.

While the push to integrate renewable energy into grids across the Middle East has made great strides over the past five years, with 2.5GW of clean energy coming online in 2019, the economic impact of Covid-19 and the sharp fall in oil prices has raised questions over the ambitious clean energy investment programmes planned throughout the region.

For the live webinar, I am delighted to host the following key figures and experts in the region’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector:

  • Brendan Cronin, Head of Middle East, Afry Management Consulting
  • Suresh Bhaskar, Executive Vice President & head of business development, Engie, MESCAT
  • Pri McNair, Regional Head of Client Coverage, HSBC Bank Middle East
  • Mohammed Atif, Regional Manager Middle East & Africa, DNV GL
  • Dr Alex Hernandez, Director Renewable Energy Cluster, Industrial Clusters, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy, Industry & Mineral Resources

I look forward to welcoming you on 28 April for our live interactive discussion. The audience will be able to submit questions to the speakers throughout the 1-hour broadcast.

Impact of Covid-19 on renewable energy programmes

With the world facing an unprecedented challenge in dealing with the biggest health crisis for a century and oil prices having fallen to their lowest level for almost two decades, what impact is Covid-19 having on renewable energy programmes?

 Webinar will look at:

  • What impact will the lower oil prices have on renewable energy deployment?
  • What constraints has the covid outbreak put on supply chains for key materials for renewable energy projects?
  • With the majority of PV solar components coming from China, what impact has the covid-19 outbreak had on supply chains?
  • Due to their lower cost and simpler design, could the covid-19 outbreak result in an increase in planned renewables capacity?
  • With the majority of planned renewable energy projects to be privately financed, what impact will the covid-19 crisis have on developers and clients securing finance to deliver projects?
  • How is the region doing in terms of plans to build local manufacturing facilities for PV solar and wind energy components?
