Adnoc and Masdar join BP’s UK hydrogen projects

UAE-based energy firms Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Masdar have joined project companies for the development of major blue and green hydrogen projects in the UK

UAE-based energy firms Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Masdar have joined project companies for the development of major blue and green hydrogen projects in the UK.

Adnoc will take a 25 per cent stake in BP’s blue hydrogen project, H2Teeside. The project, which is currently in the design phase, will be Adnoc’s first investment in the UK. H2Teeside is expected to kickstart the UK’s hydrogen economy at scale with the development of two 500MW hydrogen production units by 2030. They are targeting for the project to begin operations in 2027.

Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to acquire a stake in BP’s proposed green hydrogen project, HyGreen Teeside. The project is planned to produce 60MW of hydrogen at start-up in 2025, with the aim of increasing it up to 500MW by 2030.

Combined, the two projects could deliver 15 per cent of the UK’s target of 10GW of hydrogen production by 2030.

BP will also partner with Adnoc to conduct a joint-feasibility study for a planned blue hydrogen project in Abu Dhabi.
