Acwa Power signs agreements for 1.5GW Uzbekistan wind farm

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power has signed the implementation agreement with the Uzbekistan Ministry of Energy for a planned 1,500MW wind farm in Uzbekistan, which will be one of the largest wind farms in the world when completed

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power has signed the implementation agreement with the Uzbekistan Ministry of Energy for a planned 1,500MW wind farm in Uzbekistan, which will be one of the largest wind farms in the world when completed.

Acwa Power signed the implementation agreement with the Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investments & Foreign Trade and Ministry of Energy for the independent power producer (IPP) project, which will be located in the Karakalpakstan area of Uzbekistan.

Earlier this year, Acwa Power concluded agreements for two wind power projects in Bukhara and Navoi, which will have a combined total power capacity of 1,000MW.

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power signed the initial strategic agreements for the projects, which will have a combined value of more than $2bn, with Uzbekistan’s government in March 2020.

In addition to the Navoi and Bukhara wind projects, the agreement covered the construction and operation of a 1,500MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.

Acwa Power is also developing the $1bn Sirdarya CCGT IPP in Uzbekistan. The project reached financial close in April this year.

Once completed, the 1.5GW Sirdarya IPP is expected to meet 15 per cent of Uzbekistan’s power demand and will form 8 per cent of the country’s total power capacity.
