Abu Dhabi launches new energy services company

Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) has launched a new energy services company to oversee programmes and solutions to reduce energy and water usage throughout the emirate.

Abu Dhabi Energy Services Company (ADES) will seek to engage the private sector to participate in reducing consumption for utilities in the emirate in line with Abu Dhabi’s ‘Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalisation Strategy 2030.’ One of the programmes which the newly-established ADES is expected to oversee is the retrofitting of existing buildings to reduce energy and water consumption.

ADPower has emerged as a key entity in the UAE’s utilities sector following the restructuring of Abu Dhabi’s power and water companies over the past three years. The most significant reforms were announced in November 2018, when Emirates Water & Electricity Company (Ewec) was established to replace Adwec (Adwec) as the offtaker and client for delivering new utilities projects across Abu Dhabi.

Ewec was established to not only replace Adwec in Abu Dhabi, but also to assume responsibility for buying and selling electricity and water production from the Federal Electricity Company (Fewa), the state utility provider for the Northern Emirates.

Once a bilateral agreement between Ewec and Fewa is completed for the latter to join the new company, Ewec will be responsible for distributing more than 80 terawatts of electricity and 1.2 billion metres of water across the UAE annually. Ewec will fall under the umbrella of ADPower, which will effectively oversee the management of power and water assets across five emirates and will will have the final approval of new projects.
